The Contour
Butterfly memory foam pillow, six colors
$42.99
A wide memory foam pillow with a hollow in the center for your head and cut-outs near the corners for your arms. One long edge is higher than the other, so you can turn it around to change the height.
Overview
Butterfly-shaped contour pillow, 24.4 × 16.1 in (62 × 41 cm). Center hollow for the back of your head, arm cut-outs near the corners, and two edge heights: 5.1 in and 4.3 in (13 and 11 cm). Sizes are the maker's listed measurements.
Materials
Memory foam core. Removable cover with a knit top and quilted 3D mesh sides.
Care
Take the cover off and wash it following its care label. Air the foam core out and spot clean it.
How people sleep on it
Made for back and side sleepers, the two positions Harvard Health calls easiest on the neck.

On your back
The back of your head rests in the hollow in the middle.

On your side
Your arm slides into a cut-out, so it isn't squashed under the pillow.
Stiff neck in the morning? Start with the height.
Harvard Health says side and back sleeping are easiest on the neck, and that a pillow that's too high keeps your neck bent all night. Here's how to tell which edge of The Contour fits you.
Too high
Your head gets pushed up and your neck bends. Turn the pillow around and try the 4.3 in edge.
About right
Your neck lines up with your back. Nothing feels pushed up or left hanging.
Too low
Your head sinks toward the mattress. Use the 5.1 in edge.
Simplified drawings. A pillow doesn't treat neck pain. If your neck hurts for more than a few weeks, see a doctor or physical therapist. Source: Harvard Health, neck pain and sleep.
Higher edge or lower edge
Same pillow, turned around. Pick the one that keeps your head level.
5.1 in edge
More lift under your neck. A good place to start.
4.3 in edge
Less lift. Turn the pillow around if the higher edge tips your head back.
Snore more on your back?
On your back, the tongue can fall back and narrow the airway. That's why Mayo Clinic suggests sleeping on your side if you snore. The Contour is comfortable on your side: your arm goes into the cut-out instead of under your head, and you can turn it to the edge height that keeps your head level.
It's a pillow, not a snoring treatment, and it won't work for everyone. If you stop breathing for moments at night, wake up gasping or feel sleepy all day, see a doctor: those can be signs of sleep apnea. Source: Mayo Clinic, snoring.

Sharing a bed? Get two.
Each of you turns your own pillow to the edge that suits you, 5.1 in or 4.3 in. Two pillows cost 15% less.

Room for both arms

Hugging it
Both arms wrap around the sides instead of ending up under your head.

Hands at the edges
The cut-outs at each end give your hands and forearms somewhere to rest.
Your head stays in the middle
The hollow holds the back of your head, the raised sides keep it from rolling off, and the edge fills the space under your neck. Not propped up, not dropped back, not sliding to one side.

In the middle, not off to the side
The hollow holds the back of your head and the raised sides keep it from drifting to one side.
Not too high, not too low
The edge under your neck fills the gap, so your head isn't propped up or left to drop back.
Neck and back in one line
When the height suits you, your head, neck and upper back line up.
The labels are ours.
Made to sleep cooler
The top is a soft knit and the sides are an open 3D mesh, so warm air has somewhere to go.

Soft on your skin
The knit top is the part your face and head rest on.
Air can move
Open 3D mesh around the sides lets warm air out instead of holding it in. Memory foam itself still holds more warmth than a fiber-filled pillow.
Easy to keep fresh
The cover comes off for washing.

What each part is for
The Contour on a bed. Four parts, each with a job.
-
Center hollow
A shallow dip for the back of your head when you lie on your back.
-
Fuller sides
Turn onto your side and your head moves off the hollow onto one of these.
-
Arm cut-outs
The narrow waist at each end. Your arm fits in here when you sleep on your side.
-
Neck edge
The long edge that goes under your neck. One long edge is 5.1 in high, the other 4.3 in.
Next to a regular pillow
What the shape changes, drawn simply.
On your back
Your head rests in the hollow and the edge fills the space under your neck.
Your head sits on top, which can leave a gap under your neck.
On your side
Cut-outs at both ends leave room for your arms, so neither one ends up pinned under your head.
Your arm tends to end up under the pillow, with your head on top of it.
Height
Two heights in one pillow. Turn it around to switch.
One height. To change it, you add a second pillow or fold this one.
Simplified drawings, not to scale. The dashed line follows head, neck and shoulders. They show the shape, not a medical result.

Getting started with The Contour
Unbox and give it time
Memory foam can arrive compressed. Leave it out of the packaging so it recovers its shape.
Pick your edge
Start with the 5.1 in edge under your neck. If it feels too tall, turn the pillow around.
Use the arm cut-outs
On your side, the shaped corners leave room for your arm under the pillow.
Wash the cover, not the foam
Take the cover off and wash it following its care label. Air the foam core out instead.
The first few nights
A new shape takes getting used to. Here's what to expect, and what to do if it isn't right.
-
Night 1
It feels different
Firmer and more shaped than a regular pillow. That's normal for contoured memory foam.
-
Nights 2 to 3
Try the other edge
If your head tips back or your neck feels pushed up, turn it around to the 4.3 in edge.
-
Week 2
A fair test
By now you've slept on both edges, on your back and on your side. You'll know if the shape suits you.
-
Day 30
Last day to start a return
If it isn't for you, start a return within 30 days. What can be returned, and in what condition, is in our returns policy.

About The Contour
Which edge should go under my neck?
Try the 5.1 in edge first. If your head tips back or it feels too tall, turn the pillow around and use the 4.3 in edge.
Will it help my neck pain?
We can't promise that, and it isn't a treatment. What it gives you is a neck edge in two heights, so you can set up what Harvard Health suggests: sleep on your side or back, on a pillow that isn't too high. If your neck hurts for more than a few weeks, see a doctor or physical therapist.
Will it help with snoring?
We can't promise that. Snoring has many causes, and a pillow doesn't treat any of them. What The Contour does is make side sleeping comfortable, and sleeping on your side is one of Mayo Clinic's tips for snoring. If you stop breathing for moments at night, wake up gasping or feel sleepy all day, see a doctor: those can be signs of sleep apnea.
I have scoliosis. Will it help?
It won't change the curve of your spine, and it isn't a scoliosis treatment. Ask your doctor or physical therapist which sleep position suits your curve. If it's your side or your back, try both edge heights and keep the one that holds your head level.
Does it come with a cover?
Yes. It ships with its removable cover already on the pillow.
Is it a medical product?
No. It is a comfort pillow, not a medical device, and it is not meant to diagnose or treat any condition. For ongoing pain, talk to a doctor or physical therapist.
Will I sleep hot on it?
The top is a soft knit and the sides are a quilted 3D mesh, so heat has a way out. Memory foam itself holds more warmth than a fiber-filled pillow, so if you sleep very hot, keep that in mind.
Can I use my own pillowcase?
A standard rectangular case will not follow the contour or the arm cut-outs, so the included cover fits best.
Can the two pillows be different colors?
Yes. Add each color to the cart. The 15% comes off at checkout whenever there are two or more Contours in the cart. It doesn't combine with other discount codes.
